This series is about places that I have a strong sentimental attachment to. I got the idea to make these paintings when I found old camcorder videos of my friend and I having conversations in various places around our hometown. I loved the candidness of the conversations and how the film, although low quality, was able to capture the essence of these places better than a professional photo. It took me a while to figure out how I would translate this all into paintings. I tried many different ways of painting the videos, and tried to include text from the conversations, but I ended up simply taking stills from the videos and painting them, embracing their low quality as it added character to the locations. I learned while making these paintings that I liked the concept much more than the finished product. I didn’t feel I really captured what I wanted through the paintings, and realized that maybe the videos were the art themselves and didn’t need to be messed with to mean something more.
